IN ENGLISH

This collection of creative bicycle ideas presents a variety of ideas and initiatives that could make cycling an attractive choice for a more diverse group of people, increase availability and accessibility to cycling, change norms and attitudes surrounding women and cycling, and increase cycling’s value, safety and security.

Examining the context of rural areas in developing countries, where there are clear mobility and infrastructural limitations for women, there are several examples of gender-specific initiatives that focus on helping girls and women to get more mobile by encouraging cycling. When examining European and North American contexts where cycling rates are comparatively higher for both men and women, the interventions and ideas are less gender specific. Emphasis is commonly on environmental rather than social aspects of cycling. The initiatives are generally about encouraging motorists to cycle in order to achieve more sustainable cities. Within these contexts, both civil society organizations and public sector seem to overlook the mobility inequalities between groups of people, and initiatives that aim to make the cycling community more inclusive and diverse, appear to be organized by enthusiasts who are tired of heterogeneous bicycle paths and dusty racial and gender norms.
